Knives Out (Rian Johnson, 2019)

Knives Out is one of the most twisty turny films I have ever had the pleasure to watch. The very structure of it leads the audience on a path of fabulous confusion that makes you doubt if it was even a ‘Who Done It’ in the first place. It is about the suicide/suspected murder of Harlan Thrombey, a wealthy mystery writer, and the various suspects surrounding him. His slightly, if not very, problematic family. Not only does it catch you in webs and lies, it leads every single character through it as well. There is no sense of dramatic irony, when the audience knows something the characters don’t, as we find out in the final scene, even though you are lead to believe there is. It is one of the most enjoyable yet completely tragic stories in a murder mystery I have seen. As well as this, there is something about it that keeps the traditional aesthetics of a murder mystery, while incorporating modern views on society as well. From the Trump supporting son-in-law Richard to the right-wing Jacob, whose views are completely backwards. 

In the will reading scene, Harlan’s wealth is left to his nurse, Marta, a kind-hearted woman who was a friend to him till the very end… Although his family don’t see it like that. And with that, comes the unravelling of the truth. It is revealed, after many labyrinthine events, that his grandson, Ransom (yes, Ransom), devised an elaborate plan to gain his cut of the will after finding out he was being removed from it. Although, this elaborate plan of a greedy man is foiled because of his lack of regard for, as he calls them, “the help.” And therefore, his narcissistic opinions completely cripple him in the end.
