The last song of 20000 Days on Earth is ‘Jubilee Street’, the main line being “I’m transforming.” And this completely embodies the transcendent nature of the film. Nick Cave created this documentary in order to preserve himself; he becomes frozen in time. One dominant theme of this film is memory, more importantly the encompassing fear of losing them. But in this way, capturing his life through montages and reconstructions, there is no way he can lose his past. Iain Forsythe and Jane Pollard create a pristine, perfectly visual version of Nick Cave, and this perhaps highlights that this is just a version. A carefully constructed human being. And this makes the transcendence of the film even more overwhelming. No one, not even Nick Cave, knows the difference between the blurred line of reality and illusion. But then again, anything can be reality, and anything can be illusion, so why can’t Nick Cave be both?
